By-Ray is an amalgamation of 2 great New Zealand engineering based companies, Keenedge Precision Tools and By-Ray Products, with experience spanning over 60 years.  

Ray Atkins was born and trained in England, left school at an early age to pursue an engineering apprenticeship with a company manufacturing woodwork tooling.  Here he was able to demonstrate his natural ability with angles.  10 years later Ray found a position as a toolmaker and proved himself to be a better than average engineer.  Ray with ability to problem solve, constantly thought of ideas how to improve operations and processes within the tool room.

In 1971 Ray now capable and experienced in many trades immigrated to New Zealand with wife Beryl and daughter Susan.  Arriving in New Zealand Ray was employed as a toolmaker producing drilling and welding jigs along with HSS form tools.  This work he found tedious and took a position manufacturing press tools and injection moulds.  Once again this did not satisfy his active mind and in 1975 with $500 he formed By-Ray Products Ltd.


Tony Hutchinson was also born and trained in England, left school at an early age to pursue an building  apprenticeship with a house and commercial building company.  After moving to New Zealand in the sixties and with a keen sence of engineering Tony with ability to problem solve emnbarked on a engineering business which later became known by reputation as Keenedge Precision Tools.  Keenedge Precision Tools was founded in 1976 in Auckland to sharpen tools for the engineering trade. During this time Keenedge has continually moved with the market and the markets demands

By-Ray is known in the industry for its problem solving capabilities and production of specialized one off tooling, together with the ability to produce large tooling quantities.  By-Ray will still continue as a company willing to undertake new and complicated tasks on request.
